about me

Nice to meet you! I'm Nic, a composer & sound designer based in the Midwest.

You’ll find that most of my work is musical. That’s because music has always been my first love, and I jump at any chance to create it.

My music has traversed many territories. I’ve composed and performed across a broad spectrum, including orchestral works, wind symphony, choral pieces, jazz ensembles, electronic music, and even dance music (a surprisingly frequent request!), as well as small ensembles and solo works. Beyond that, I’ve had lots of unique instrumentation requests, and I am always eager to try new things!

The area of sound is a more recent passion of mine. I am fascinated by the things which sound can make us feel, and by the idea that an entire world can be contained solely within the realm of sound. I have fallen in love with the whole process of sound design – field recording, editing, creating sound effects. I love to pick up unique sounds whenever I can. You never know when you might need them.

My favorite part about both music and sound is the opportunity to collaborate with others towards one creative vision. It’s a process which ignites me with excitement and makes me feel the depth of life.

My Influences

If I had to choose one composer to listen to exclusively for the rest of my life, it would be John Williams. He is an irreplaceable, towering creative genius, and I am deeply inspired by him. I am also moved by works which fuse electronics and acoustic instruments into something new and organic–on this front, Hans Zimmer, and Ludwig Göransson are leading the pack. Outside the film world, certainly there are too many to choose from, but inspirations off the top of my head would be (in no particular order) Aaron Copland, John Adams, Maurice Ravel, KOAN Sound, Bill Evans, Prokofiev, and Brad Meldhau.

My Core Belief

I believe that this world is an inspired creation made by an intelligent designer—Jehovah, the one true God. He and His creation are the spark for all of my work. If you’re interested in hearing more about that, you should really check out the book He wrote.
